Today’s Visit to Pan-American Academy
May 23rd, 2014
This morning Mimi Stillman and Gabriel Globus-Hoenich visited Pan-American Academy, a bilingual English-Spanish school in the Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia and one of our “Música en tus Manos” partner organizations. We are working with Celina Velez, music teacher, to coordinate a side-by-side performance in which her 5th grade recorder students will perform with Dolce Suono Ensemble at our concert at Gould Hall, Curtis Institute of Music Lenfest Hall, on Saturday, May 31, 2014 at 7:30pm. For concert information, please click here.
We had a wonderful time performing for the students, talking with them about music, and coaching them on the two pieces we will perform together at the side-by-side. Mimi spoke in Spanish and English to these students who conduct schoolwork in both languages. A highlight was when Celina led her students in singing a song that they had prepared for us. We also played for a 1st grade music class, and held an Instrument “Petting Zoo” at which students tried a flute graciously provided by Yamaha under Mimi’s guidance, and percussion instruments with Gabriel’s instruction.
Thank you to the Knight Foundation for supporting “Música en tus Manos” through the Knight Arts Challenge award, and to the Yamaha Corporation of America.
