DSE Young Composers Competition Winners Announced!

March 17th, 2013

Dolce Suono Ensemble is pleased to announce the winners of its first Young Composers Competition. Held as part of our season-long theme “Debussy in Our Midst: A Celebration of the 150th Anniversary of Claude Debussy (1862-1918),” composers age 30 and under were invited to submit new works which are reflections on Debussy’s songs.

The winning pieces will receive world premiere performances on Sunday, May 19, 2013 at 3:00pm at Field Concert Hall at the Curtis Institute of Music, Philadelphia, with the composers introducing their works and participating in a post-concert conversation. The pieces will be performed by Sarah Shafer, soprano, Mimi Stillman, flute, and Natalie Zhu, piano.

A distinguished panel of judges – Soprano Lucy Shelton and composers Steven Stucky and David Ludwig – selected seven winners from among a large number of submissions received from throughout the United States. And the winners are:

Kai-Young Chan, Philadelphia, PA

Hong-Da Chin, Louisville, KY

Viet Cuong, Princeton, NJ

Michael-Thomas Foumai, Ann Arbor, MI

Chason Goldfinger, Malvern, PA

Hearty congratulations to these talented young composers. We look forward to performing their music on May 19!
