October: “The Season of the Word” Opening Concerts

Dolce Suono Ensemble’s “The Season of the Word” opens with two performances in October with magnificent repertoire and dazzling artists. On October 15, DSE opens year 2 of “Fall for Chamber Music,” our 3-year project engaging new audiences in chamber music at two of Philadelphia’s favorite civic venues. DSE will present a concert with music by Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Dvorak, Reinecke, Chaminade, and Ravel,  and a masterclass in which two pianists will perform with and receive coaching from DSE artists.

Soprano Sarah Shafer (Metropolitan Opera, Opera Philadelphia) will be featured in both concerts. She has delighted our audiences since 2013 in projects devoted to Debussy, opera, and more. Making his DSE debut on October 15 is Hugh Sung, piano (pianist, author, and tech entrepreneur). Completing the ensemble for this concert are DSE founding Artistic Director Mimi Stillman, flute (soloist; Yamaha Performing Artist, Temple University faculty), and DSE core pianist Charles Abramovic (Director of Keyboard Studies, Temple University).

On October 27, DSE Presents opens the season with “Bach Masterworks,” a program highlighting the genius of Bach in music sacred and secular, with selections from cantatas, concertos, suites, and sonatas. Sarah Shafer will perform with Mimi Stillman, Charles Abramovic, William Polk, violin (The Philadelphia Orchestra), Kerri Ryan, viola (The Philadelphia Orchestra), Arlen Hlusko, cello (EnsembleConnect), and Mary Javian, bass (faculty, Curtis Institute of Music).

DSE’s 2019-2020 season theme is “The Season of the Word.” Throughout the season, DSE will integrate music with the spoken word. DSE artists and a guest actor will narrate in works by Saint-Saëns, Berio, and Fang Man. And listen for the unexpected!
