Tea with Mimi

“Wow!! Thank you for a very special episode with Lady Jeanne and Sir James! I am certain I will watch this episode many more times. Lady Jeanne and Sir James enjoyed speaking with you very much. I loved hearing Sir James play the pennywhistle and it was thrilling when you and Sir James played Bach together. I have always loved James Galway’s playing. He does make the flute sing. I knew that James Galway met his wife at the Julius Baker Masterclass. I learned this when I attended the Masterclass as an auditor. Also I was fortunate to meet you and Ronni at the Masterclass! I think this interview is important for documenting James Galway in his later years. It shows that Jeanne is a strong life and music partner to James Galway.  It was touching and lovely seeing them together. Congratulations on an interview for the ages.” – C.B.

“It was great to meet your ENT doctor on “Tea with Mimi”. He is charming, interesting, and has a wonderful smile. I am glad he is helping you with your vestibular migraine problem.  It is clear you and Dr. Shah have bonded over music. I love the clip of you and DSE musicians playing Badinerie from Suite in B minor.  I frequently watch  your video and love practicing the Badinerie myself.  I am in awe of your wonderful, clear, even, unrushed articulation.  Like Dr. Shah I play the Badinerie much slower than you. It is interesting Dr. Shah plays the violin. I want to do all I can to protect my hearing.  I found the conversation with Dr. Shah helpful.” – C.B.

“I remember Jacob Beranek from your terrific Young Composer Lab project.  He is an engaging young man.  I enjoyed your conversation very much.  It is exciting to hear two musicians talk about music. I loved hearing stories about David Serkin Ludwig, Steven Stucky, Aaron Copland, Brahms, Dvorak, and Martinu. You are a wonderful interviewer.  You bring out the best in the people you interview. I loved listening to you and Charlie play Jacob’s “Sonata for flute and piano”. Jacob said he thought of you and your exquisite flute playing when he wrote the work. Wow! Congratulations on a special interview and a grand night of music and conversation on “Tea with Mimi”. – C.B.

“Congratulations on another astounding “Tea with Mimi” episode with Shulamit Ran! Your interview and conversation with Shulamit was captivating. I learned so much. The musical excerpts were great. I loved hearing you play the “East Wind” flute solo. The Anne Frank opera with the Prisoner’s Chorus was spellbinding. Every minute of the interview was terrific. I am happy to learn more about the life and music of Shulamit Ran. Thank you so much for this wonderful series.” – C.B.

“Tea with Mimi makes me feel like we’re hanging out in Mimi’s living room, sharing great conversation & great music (and tea) with good, highly musical friends. I learn something I can utilize in my own conducting & singing almost every time, and it is wonderful, inspiring, and somewhat awesome to learn from the caliber of musicians who visit. With each session, Mimi continues to grow & develop the Tea with Mimi format into a valuable, comfortable, and thoroughly enjoyable asset. I always look forward to the next one!” – R.R.

“Cool, collegial session with Michelle A. Cann. I especailly liked the discussion about how you communicate when you can’t see each other. ‘You lead with your sound.’ I appreciate the musical insights I often get from Teas with Mimi, and I very much appreciate your style in having these very genuine conversations with your colleagues – you continue to get better & better at this format – brava!” – R.R.

“Congratulations on the program with Brandon Patrick George.  It was great to meet him.  I loved every minute of it.” – C.B.

“I was very happy  to listen to a new “Tea with Mimi” episode.  Unfortunately I missed the first few minutes of the program, but will listen to the whole interview when it goes up on your youtube channel.

Thank you for introducing me to the captivating composer, Tzui Auni.  You did a masterful job of interweaving questions about his life along with musical excerpts. Tzui Auni has a powerful life story and he knew and worked with many of the musical greats of the past.

It was an amazing hour of meaningful conversation between two friends and two extraordinary musicians. Congratulations on adding another wonderful program to the powerful “Tea with Mimi” series. I think this series will go down in history!” – C.B.

“I enjoyed your conversation with Diane Wittry very much. It is amazing to listen to two extraordinary musicians speak about their craft. You interviewed Diane with great skill.  The conversation about the art of conducting was fascinating.

The musical excerpts were terrific.  I loved hearing you play “Irises” from Zhou Tian’s Concerto. I was captivated by Diane Wittry’s powerful and graceful conducting.  She looked like she was embracing the orchestra and did this with a genuine, warm smile. I found her left and right arm movements beautiful to watch. Thank you for inviting Diane Wittry on your series.  I was thrilled to meet her.  The Allentown Orchestra is fortunate to have such a committed and talented conductor. – C.B.

“Thank you for another great musical conversation with Zhou Tian. It was interesting to hear about Zhou Tian’s life and process for composing music. He is amazing.  I am happy you played Concerto excerpts and then discussed the music.  Zhou Tian loved how you played the Concerto.  I did too. Congratulations on another fascinating interview.” – C.B.

“Thank you so much for Tea with Mimi with Jeffrey Khaner and Tea with Mimi with Jennifer Higdon.  They both were wonderful interviews. I have listened to the Jeffrey Khaner program twice and will listen to the Jennifer Higdon program again soon.” – C.B.

“Congratulations on another great Tea with Mimi program with Mary Javian and Stanford Thompson. They both are impressive with their work with young musicians.  The Play on Philly organization sounds like a wonderful opportunity for Philly children to learn to play a musical instrument and to perform on a regular basis.

You are impressive how you conduct the interview with two people and insert musical videos.  Last night was very enjoyable listening to “Tea with Mimi” #30. I watched it on your youtube channel and the sound and the video was very good.

Recently I discovered the video of you playing flute parts 1 and 2 for the Scherzo from Mendelssohn’s Midsummer Night’s Dream by Altes. I am having lots of fun learning and playing the parts.  I love your playing of the Altes transcription of the duet.  It is lightening fast and your tonguing is so clear! You produce some amazing percussive sounds on the flute! Thank you for posting this duet.” – C.B.

“Thanks for another wonderful program!  The conversation was fascinating between you and John. You two have a great rapport.  It was a wise and inspiring conversation.  You did a superb job of interviewing John.  The music clips nicely fit in with the conversation.  I liked the duet you and John performed, without rehearsal, very much.  I love to watch drummers.  I am sure I will watch this program again.  This show made my night. Congratulations on your special Tea with Mimi series.” – C.B.

“Congratulations on another great Tea with Mimi program.  It was fascinating to hear you and Samuel Zyman talk in English and Spanish about his compositions.  The music excerpts were wonderful.  As Samuel Zyman said at the beginning of the program, “You do amazing work!”  This was a terrific introduction to the “B to Z” concert on Sunday.” – C.B.

“It is wonderful to hear you and Charlie play together and discuss the music. Congratulations on 20 years of being a duo. Thanks for the great Copland and Piston program. It is interesting that you don’t routinely go back and listen to your music videos.  It is wonderful to learn about the Copland and Piston works.  I have the music and am working on the Copland.  Jim listened to the “Tea with Mimi” live-stream with me.  I followed the flute part and Jim followed the piano part. We both loved this special “Tea with Mimi” episode.  Thank you so much.” – C.B.

“Enjoyed your fabulous flute and piccolo playing along with Charlie on piano and the percussion ensemble in”Halil” by Leonard Bernstein.  It was exciting to see six percussion players and piano at once.  The music and livestream  conversation about “Halil” with Phillip O’Banion was intriguing.   I did not know Julius Baker played “Halil” with Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic. Thank you for another wonderful episode of “Tea with Mimi”. You are amazing!” – C.B.
