Rehearsal video – Lucy Shelton sings Fang Man

This evening we had an exciting rehearsal with the magnificent Lucy Shelton on Fang Man’s new piece, Song of a Lonely Autumn Night, which we will be premiering at Symphony Space on Monday, February 6. Last season we premiered Mandy’s Song of Sorrow with bass-baritone Eric Owens as part of our “Mahler 100 / Schoenberg 60″ project, and this is the second song in a larger cycle of Mandy’s settings in original Chinese of the same poems by Li Bai which Mahler set in Das Lied von der Erde, in German translation by Hans Bethge.

Join us on Monday to hear the entire piece. Our concert, “Dolce Suono Ensemble Commissions and Premieres,” is part of the city-wide Composers Now Festival and features seven of our recent commissioned works. Our star-studded cast also includes composers Richard Danielpour, David Ludwig, Steven Mackey, Stratis MinakakisShulamit Ran, Steven Stucky and baritone Randall Scarlata.

Outreach at Masterman School

This afternoon, percussionist Gabriel Globus-Hoenich and I gave a performance and presentation at Masterman School as a preview for our “Mahler 100 / Schoenberg 60″ project with concerts Feb. 3 in Haverford, Feb. 5 in Philadelphia, and Feb. 6 in New York.

Masterman is one of my favorite schools to visit, and it’s one of Dolce Suono Ensemble’s oldest educational outreach partnerships. The music director there, Kim Kelter Neu, is very talented, dedicated, and successful, as her middle and high school music students are some of the most knowledgeable and sophisticated my colleagues and I have encountered.

Gabe and I had fun performing music from Jewish and Latin traditions, as well as excerpts from Schoenberg’s Pierrot lunaire.

Gabe brought student volunteers up to play percussion instruments as part of an exercise in which the class learns about creating rhythmic patterns.
