Meet Andy Yu

ANDY YU (b. 2004) is a Maryland-based composer. After he started receiving formal guidance at the age of 12, he has matured into an adventurous composer of instrumental and vocal music. Andy’s pieces have been performed by ensembles throughout the Mid-Atlantic US. He was the state winner of the MTNA Composition Competition in 2019. He has attended masterclasses and seminars taught by Sandbox Percussion, John Mackey, Gabriela Lena Frank, and Steve Antosca. In the summer of 2020, he attended the Curtis Young Artist Summer Program (YASP) as a composer. 

His composition teachers have included Natalie Draper and Frances McKay. In addition to composition, Andy is also a pianist. He has participated in competitions and festivals by the Maryland State Music Teachers Association (MSMTA). He is principal pianist of Young Artists of America (YAA) and has played in various chamber ensembles.
